Wilderness Trail Run & Friday Cruise In at Kingsport Town Center

A Big Thank You to Major Sponsors: Rainbow Motors &

                  Advance Auto Parts.

The 2010 version of the KARC’s Super Cruise started off on Saturday the 29th of May, after our Friday night Super Cruise was rained out.  This rain out was the first time ever for a rain out of one of our events. We have had rain, but never a complete rain out.  The Super Cruise was rescheduled for Friday June 4th.

Weather for the Wilderness Trail Run was sunny and warm, with no rain.

Some of the highlights of the Wilderness Trail downtown show were:

  1. New record # of registered participants with 309 registered.
  2. An anonymous club member bought 6 bicycles to be given away. Rainbow Motors bought 2bicycles for the downtown show, and 2 bicycles for the Super Cruise at the Kingsport Town Center. The KARC also bought 2 bicycles for a total of 12 bikes given away at the two shows.
  3. KARC member Mack Armstrong was awarded the Buck Doran Memorial Award. This award is given by D&D Rod and Custom Shop located in Church Hill, TN. This was their eleventh time to have given this award out at our show.  The D&D team consists of the father and son team of Bucky and Leon Doran, and the award is given in remembrance of Bucky’s dad Buck Doran. This is a nice enhancement for our show, and couldn’t have been given to a better person than Mack. Thanks Bucky and Leon for your continued support of our show.
  4. A good number of the KARC members showed up ready to work, and pitched in wholeheartedly.  When enough people attend that allows rotation at the gates and other high activity areas. We even had people show up with crutches and worked.  That includes Ronnie Gott who always shows up with his crutches and always works. One other member with crutches also showed up, and put in an 8-10 hour day.
  5. Our method of taking money at the gates seems to be working well, with minimal whining from a few participants. I did hear a KARC member asked a non payer to leave after he had stormed the gate.  The non payer reportedly left, without further incident..
  6. Car Show Chairman Mike Smith thought it was the smoothest one yet.
  7. Bone Fire Restaurant once again paid for all KARC members dinners, if they wished to partake.  Bone Fire seemed to be especially busy, and hopefully had a great day.
  8. The best 50/50 pot yet with over $900 to split was accomplished by the hard working Bob Smith, and possibly a helper or two. Good job, Bob.
  9. Ronnie Gott was asked to come up front at the awards presentation and was told that he had been awarded a life time membership in the KARC.  That was a unanimous vote at the May meeting, and a very popular motion when brought up. Congratulations to the ever diligent hard working Ronnie.  From the beginning of the KARC in 1974, we think that this is only the 6th life time membership to be awarded to a member.
  10. Thanks to all members who showed up ready to work, and helped to make this another show to be proud of.
  11. All dash plaques on hand  were given to participants, but we will discuss at the June meeting if there is enough interest, the club can purchase additional plaques  so that each member will receive a dash plaque!
  12. Lots of photos on club web site.

2010 Super Cruise

This year marked our first Super Cruise location change after being at the Wal-Mart on Fort Henry Dr. for 10 years.  KARC member Jim Collier made initial contact with the Kingsport Town Center management regarding the possibility of holding our annual Super Cruise there. The Town Center manger is Kevin Harmon and the Marketing  Manager is Amy Boyles.  Both were easy to work with  and a good deal of effort was put forth on their part, as well as the Town Center buying 300 dash plaques, and Amy was able to get 28 nice door prizes from merchants at the Town Center. All participants that we heard from liked this location better than the old one. We believe and hope they were pleased with the turn out and hope to work with them in the future. We had 140 registered cars but there well over 300 Super Cruisers, and tons of spectators.  Hopefully this spilled over to some business for the Mall, uhh, that’s Town Center. It’s Hard to break old habits.

Great news from the Super Cruise was the donations for Ronald McDonald house was $1011. We had already taken in $215 dollars on the previous Sat. at the Wilderness Trail Run. We are also contemplating if we give the clubs half of the 50/50 pot  to the Ronald McDonald  House.  Bob Smith did another good job with each half being $193. Keith Owens was interviewed Thursday morning before the Super Cruise on WKPT radio with Dave Light.  Keith had an informative interview with Dave and even got in a plug for our club. Don’t know if Keith has been offered any DJ jobs, but he did a good job. Thanks go to Jim Collier for his work on the Super Cruise, and to Amy Boyles for her work and A Big Thank You to the Kingsport Town Center.

The R & R Picnic

For the 2nd consecutive year Rayford Dingus and Randy Bledsoe (and significant others) held their Pre Cruise/ Rod Run Picnic The picnic was held at Rayfords log cabin on Log Cabin Lane, somewhere between Gate City, VA, and Nickelsville, VA,  on Thursday May 27. Several members of the infamous Winnsboro, SC gang showed up and they brought along some of their  North Carolina buddies. Several KARC members were present and  member Mikel Smith brought along   some of his buddies for  a little pickin and a grinning. KARC  member Junior Way was pickin  the banjo. Good music, good food , good people , and good times.  Thanks Randy, Rayford, and all those significant others who helped to make this a very enjoyable evening.

Members Machines and Gossip

Several members dropped in at Glen Armstrongs garage on the Fri. morning before the Super Cruise and checked out Mack Armstrong’s 40Buick Coupe.  It has fresh 010 Buick Cherry paint, and the final assembly is coming together.  Powered by a 455, .030 over Buick engine Mack may have to be careful to keep his foot out of it. It’s looking really good.

If you haven’t checked out Perry Stapleton’s 40 2 dr. sedan lately, you’ll miss that new very slick and very straight black paint applied over the winter.  Perry thinks he’s about got the bugs worked out with his carbureted LT1.

Bruce Roberts has now volunteered to be the official window closer during a rain storm. Of course he may be in Yuma or Carters Valley, while the rain storm is on Ft. Henry Dr.  Ask Neil Bussel, he’ll be glad to tell you about his wet Thunderbird.

Be wary when volunteering to assist Dick Cartwright with assembling a drive on lift. On Tuesday. June 1st Dick, Sid, and neighbor Mike Palmer were assisting when Mike Palmer let one of the ramps catch his finger, nearly tearing the end off.  A trip via rescue squad and 9 hours at the Bristol hospital, and he’s back to his rollback job.  Dick & his loyal attorney are claiming no fault, no fault.!

Mike Smith reported at the GoodGuys event on May 21-23 in Nashville, TN, donations were made to help the flood victims of Nashville, to the tune of $11,000, with the Good Guys org. pledging to match that amount.  Way to step up-Good Guys.
