Merry
Christmas To All

Condolences
Our Condolences go out to Roy Reed’s wife Gaynelle
who lost her mother Margaret Gillespie on November 17th. Condolences to Gaynelle and the entire
family.
KARC
2011 Christmas Party
This year’s KARC Christmas Party will be held
December 10th at the Mead/Willamette/Domtar or current name cabin.
Members should arrive around 6pm and eat around 6.30pm. If you are not able to
attend the December meeting, we have decided for members to bring what you did
last year, or if you prefer you can switch to a new delicacy. It all seems to
work out. Fortunately Treasurer Jim Collier happened to remember we had not
ordered meat, and accordingly he stopped by the Bonfire Restaurant and ordered
the same as last year. He got Smoked turkey and ham, I think. We will discuss
at the December meeting any last minute decisions such as decorating committee, guest speaker,
and a ladder for the decorating team if Mikel Smith can’t make his annual appearance as the decoration
coordinator/installer. We encourage everyone to try and come and enjoy your
fellow KARC members and families. Do not get overly concerned about having the
correct food. Any food will be perfect for that night.
KARC
2012 Officer Elections
Just another reminder for upcoming elections at the
December Meeting. After serving as KARC
Treasurer for the last 10 years, Jim Collier has decided to step down and just
be a regular hard working member. As Treasurer Jim has been involved in nearly
every facet of the club’s activities, including our Kingsport Town Center
Cruise, Wilderness Trail Run, co-ordinating fall eatings, Christmas Party, and
a few trips to Knoxville, TN to pick up official T Shirts. Jim plans on remaining active in the club.
Jim has done an exemplary job for the KARC and we all owe him a big Thank You.
Remember that the Treasurer’s job should not be on a
short time basis because of a considerable effort involved in the change-over. The
Vice-Presidents position will also need to be voted on at the December
meeting. The VP stands in for the Prez
in conducting meetings, and as is our custom will move into the next years
President position. Be thinking if you would consider either of these
positions, or if you have a good nominee
in mind.

Machines & Gossip
Big surprise, Frank Carr went to the Turkey Run in
Daytona Beach during the Thanksgiving weekend and did NOT sell or buy
anything. That may be a first for
Frank. Frank reported it was heavily
attended this year with a really good flea market. Frank had also attended the
big Moultrie, GA automotive show/flea market the weekend before the Turkey Run
and reported that is a really good event to attend. It is approaching the size of the Turkey Run.
Several KARC members did attend the Turkey Run
including Daris and Nell Hartsock, Bruce Roberts, Perry Stapleton, and Buckshot
Elliott. Some of our more affluent
members actually have condos or homes in Florida, one within walking distance
to the Daytona Speedway.
Mack Armstrong has sold his AACA award winning 1929
Chrysler. Mack has owned the car for
many, many years but decided it was time for the big Chrysler to find a new
home. Mack also made the Times News on Friday Dec.2, with a picture of him, his
39 Buick and Dakoda Davis , who refers to Mack as Papaw. A good picture.
KARC member Johnny McClellan is in the process of
“restifing” a 56 Chevy 210 , 2dr. sedan.
Restifing is what I thought I read on Johnny’s note. Could be restoring,
rustification, resurrecting, or just bringing it back to life. The car is owned by a female friend of
Johnnys, and her dad bought the car new.
It was a 6 cyl, 3 speed, but will be a 350 ,auto, disc brakes , and
air. Remember Johnny is basically a Ford
guy, so he is having to suck up a little of his Ford pride to help out a
friend. Gutsy move, Johnny.
Mike Smith’s big, bad, black 59 Biscayne is now
history. Word is out that it left
Thanksgiving day, and the new owners called back to say how happy they were
with it. At least that’s Mike’s
version. Mike is now concentrating on
his newly purchased 64 Suburban. Maybe
we can make it an official KARC vehicle. Whatta ye think, Mike???
Long time KARC member Jay Gillette has been plagued with
health issues this year and unable to attend many meetings. Jay’s wife Patsy says that they are planning
to make the Christmas party, so we hope they can and will be glad to see Jay
and Patsy again.
Dick Cartwright’s 55 Chevy powder-coated chassis has
been reassembled complete with engine, tranny, and drive line. By club meeting he is expected to have the
new exhaust installed by Tony’s Pipe and Muffler Shop. Professional body work has also started.
Safety
Tips
In the October NSRA
Street Scene Magazine there was a
true story of a hot rodder doing some gas tank work. He had drained the tank and lines, but there
were plenty of fumes around. Using an old incandescent bulb trouble light, the
light slipped, hit the floor and burst the bulb. The fumes then lit off causing
considerable damage. Those old skin burning lights just don’t cut it anymore.
Consider an LED or fluorescent trouble light.
If you can’t afford one, maybe your brothers will help out.
In the November issue of Street Scene Magazine on
page 144 is a nice article and wire
gauge chart, helpful in determining the correct wire gauge for the main charge
wire (positive+ terminal) leaving the alternator and eventually finding its way
back to the positive post of the battery. On Chevy engines the battery positive
cable and the alternator charge wire generally join at the positive terminal on
the starter solenoid. Fords could also join at the starter solenoid , but of
course Ford solenoids are located separately from the starter.
Not a safety tip, but just a tip in general
concerning Chevrolet Vortec heads. Vortec heads were used on Chevy trucks from
96-2002 and have been verified to boost 20-40 horsepower with no other
modifications. If you are considering building a small block Chevy using these
heads, do your homework. There are issues related to total valve lift, such as
coil bind, and valve seal to retainer interference. Relatively mild cams can
cause problems here. These heads also use a special rocker arm referred to as
self aligning. They are very good bang for the buck items, just do a little
research first.
