YEAR XXXVIII

New members

The KARC would like to welcome new members Jim Edwards of Duffield, VA and Charles Edwards of Church Hill, TN. Don’t think they are related, but it’s possible. There was also some mention of another Edwards with intentions of joining the KARC.

Progress Report

This progress report is not on member’s machines, but rather health related.  We get updated regularly via e-mail on most of our members situations, however all members do not own or want computers. Therefore we will print what we hope will be of interest to those members.

As reported at the January meeting, David Davis had fallen off a ladder and spent 4 days in intensive care. He is recovering and wants all KARC members to know that he expects to fully recover, although perhaps slower than he wishes.

Glen Armstrong is recovering from knee surgery. He was able to make the Gray Automotive Flea market in January. Glen was in the company of brother James who was also recovering from a January surgery.

Buckshot Elliott has apparently recovered from complications from his early January surgery, as he has retreated back to his Daytona Beach Villa.

Paul Dory is in intensive care at Wellmont, Bristol.  Carl and Sandy have been keeping the KARC updated on Paul via the KARC e-mail. Best wishes go out to Paul and his family.

If you know of a KARC members particular situation that you think other club members would like to be aware of, you may contact Keith Owens , as he takes care of the electronic end of the Newsletter and relays pertinent info to KARC members, via e-mail.

2012 Membership Dues

Just another reminder that 2012 KARC membership dues are upon us once more, and new Treasurer Keith Owens is eagerly awaiting your hard cash.

Members Machines & Gossip

Frank Carr has purchased a 35 Ford 2 dr. sedan, not an A Model as previously reported in the newsletter. The rod has 4 wheel disc brakes and is Chevy powered.  Been sitting in the dry for a few years, much like the 37 Ford Charlie Thomas bought last fall.  It’s not the “Best One Yet”, but it will be just before Frank decides to sell it and move on.

Mike Smith’s 64 Suburban is now sitting on all new CPP chassis components purchased through Eddies Rod Shop. That’s everything including control arms, dropped spindles, springs, beefy tie rods, power steering, power brakes with13” disc brakes, new lowering rear springs, rear sway bar, and massive front sway bar.  Mike reports that this stuff actually fit as advertised, and Mike is a believer that this complete kit is the best direction to take instead of piecemeal project. The massive front discs did necessitate a larger diameter wheel.  Mike is going with 17” steelies, with dog dish hubcaps.  As of early February all Mike needed was the wheels to be shipped to him and he is on the road. He also loves to hear the small block Chevy camshaft gear drive, which can be heard over the flowmasters.

Charlie Thomas has recovered enough from his heart surgery that he is now physically working on his 32 Chevy Coupe. Fellow KARC member and Charlie’s buddy, Wayne Simmerly, is trying to keep Charlie on the straight and narrow.

Jimmy Shipley has his 73 Corvette back home after spending several months in the paint and body shop. The wait was worth it, as  the Vette has a really slick red paint covering the exterior. Jimmy refinished the interior while he was at it. Now that Jimmy’s Vette is finished he can focus attention on his F-100 pickup or 55 Chevy. The F-100 was a finished, running truck, but Jimmy decided it needed a new wire harness and attention to a few other details to make it dependable and roadworthy.  We found out that Jimmy’s 55 Chevy 2 door sedan was given to him by his grandfather when Jimmy was 16 years old. How’s that for a good human interest story. Also found out that Jimmy’s grandfather raced locally and his last car was driven by local driver Connie Saylor.  All of you old racers probably remember that name.

Of particular interest at the Friday supper was Glen Armstrong’s hair cut, as critiqued by his buddy Bill Hurd. Hurd’s comment was that he (Bill)  still had his hair and his money.

Perry Stapleton’s 40 Ford 2 dr. is in the upholstery shop with a burgundy colored owner design to be implemented. Perry hopes to have it finished in the year 2012.

Jim Collier is very close to removing the engine from his 56 Chevy and installing the “383” built by Keith Owens.  Along with the engine r&r Jim plans to do a re-wire, new A/C and several other updates while he is into the project.

The Prez, Dick Dartwright ran across a feature article on fellow KARC member Paul Dory’s 53 Buick 2 dr. hardtop.  It was in the August 2009 issue of Rod and Custom Magazine.

Metal work Class

Leon Doran of D&D Rod & Custom has informed us that he intends to have a second metal working class. This is intended to be focused to what most of us would do in the restoration of old automotive sheet metal. Things such as the use of  shrinkers, stretchers, English wheel, and other fairly inexpensive metal working tools. Leon was planning on a February or March class, but since Newsletter deadlines have approached, we do not have a date. Contact Leon at D&D Rod and Custom @ 423-357-4704. If you have seen Leon and dad Bucky’s metal work, you will know they are well qualified for such a class.

Super Cruise/Wilderness Trail

Jim Collier has contacted Amy Boyles at the Kingsport Town Center and she has confirmed that they are on board for another Super Cruise to be held on May 28th, the Friday night before our Wilderness Trail show in downtown Kingsport. At the January meeting after some discussion, it was decided that the three vehicles to be on this year’s official  flyer and T shirts would be:

Fred Hudson --- 80 Corvette,

James Armstrong — Hudson Pickup

Gary Price — 49 Plymouth 2 dr.

Members whose cars were picked are encouraged to get with club artist Jim Caswell to see if Jim needs anything specifically, as to pictures, etc.  It’s not too early to get that into the works. All members are also encouraged to check with previous or potential new sponsor/advertisers as to a commitment for the 2012 show. We generally lose a few each year, so we need to pick up a few to keep our flyer full.

Supplier Contact

At the January Club Meeting, Dick Cartwright announced that Dale Keesee, who is a Danchuck and Auto City Classic rep, has offered to extend discounts to club members who order items from these two suppliers through him. He can be reached at (423) 534-0897. Items can be viewed at these two web sites. http://www.danchuck.com/  http://www.autocityclassic.com/
